Intro NPA Velocity Program (13yo+)

What's Included:

This is what started it all! The current overload/underload phenomenon to increase velocity started with this program originally developed at the NPA (National Pitching Association). As Directors there, we worked on the research and development of this program to create THE SAFEST velocity improvement program in the nation.

 

It has been known for decades that overload/underload training increases throwing velocity. In fact, Dr. Tom House, the founder of the NPA, did his first weighted ball study with Dr. Coop DeRenne back in 1985 which confirmed the validity of weighted ball training. There was one major problem: over time athletes were getting “sore arms”, or worse, major injuries with the added velocity. Therefore, the program was shelved believing that promoting such a program was disingenuous to an athlete until it could be implemented more safely.

Fast forward 20 years and the NPA finally developed a protocol that mitigated these arm injury issues. We knew that GIRD (glenohumural internal rotation deficit) was a major predictor of potential arm injuries and so we went about trying to fix GIRD using a weighted ball program. After trying numerous iterations, not only did the protocol fix GIRD, it also led to safest arm speed increases we’d ever seen! In 2008 it was submitted to ASMI (American Sports Medicine Institute) for a peer review. This is what the Velocity Program is about: arm speed achieved as safely as currently possible. NPA Youth Starter Program (9-12yo)

What's Included:

Our Youth Starter program is an arm and shoulder durability routine to keep kids healthy while they mature through little league and travel ball. We use weighted balls in a very safe and tested manner that helps prevent kids from getting sore arms or worse. Unlike the standard weighted ball programs where kids are throwing weighted balls inappropriately, our program takes into consideration the developmental stage that youths are in and focuses on arm durability that will manifest itself into a stronger arm and more velocity as they mature physically.

Along with a set of weighted balls, we include a set of elastic cords with a throwing-specific cord workout. It targets and strengthens not just the shoulder, but the wrist, forearm and elbow.

Today’s youth have a high propensity to get “little leaguer’s elbow” (medial epicondylitis) and other elastic bands strap on at the wrist and thus only target the upper arm and shoulder. With our ergonomically designed grip, our cords engage the wrist, forearm and elbow, along with the rest of the arm.

Our Youth Starter Program also includes an essential Pre-game/Pre-practice on-field warm-up that will get the players prepared to throw, play and stay healthy when it’s time to pick-up a ball and get started.

Arm Speed and Rotator Cuff Strength

Our 2nd level program adds a shoulder strength component to support the added velocity gains when using our INTRO VELOCITY PROGRAM. In addition to the weighted balls, we include a set of our elastic cords with a pitcher-specific cord workout to maximize the effectiveness of elastic cords use. We also include a light dumbbell workout program that specifically strengthens the rotator cuff and decelerator muscles to make them more durable and withstand the demands of pitching. These two added protocols have been tested and refined over 15 years with thousands of pitchers and is the safest arm and shoulder care program available anywhere.

When working the arms and shoulders, it is IMPERATIVE that you strengthen the small muscles inside the shoulder. These include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres major, teres minor, and the subscapularis. It is these muscles that stabilize the shoulder capsule, decelerate the arm and take the brunt of throwing stress. If left unstrengthen, the result can often be a rotator cuff tear. BLACK (HS/adult): These cords are for high school athletes and above with appropriate resistance. Everyone is familiar with resistance bands. What sets the Ergo Grip Cords apart and makes them more complete are the ergonomically designed grips which add wrist, forearm and elbow resistance as part of the workout.
